Noi Bai International Airport is set to inaugurate the expanded Passenger Terminal 2 (T2) on December 19, 2025, following more than 18 months of accelerated construction that commenced on May 19, 2024. The project represents a critical strategic investment aimed at mitigating capacity constraints and increasing the terminal’s design throughput from 10 million to 15 million passengers annually, marking a significant enhancement in the airport’s international handling capabilities.

Ensuring Uninterrupted Operations and Absolute Safety During Construction

The expansion was executed amid severe capacity overload at the existing T2, which recorded nearly 13 million international passengers in the first 11 months of 2025, exceeding its original design capacity. The surge in demand placed substantial pressure on airport operations, requiring meticulous coordination to maintain construction progress without compromising security, safety, or service quality.

Throughout the implementation, Noi Bai International Airport worked closely with the T2 Expansion Project Management Unit and contractors to establish strict oversight mechanisms. The collective workforce demonstrated exceptional discipline and commitment, ensuring safe flight operations and uninterrupted airport activities while adhering to project timelines.

Significant Expansion in Scale and Functional Infrastructure

The completed project expands the terminal’s total gross floor area from 139,216 m² to 200,164 m², enabling substantial improvements across key operational systems:

  • Check-in Capacity: Check-in islands increased from 4 to 6, and counters expanded from 96 to 144, including 24 Self Bag Drop units.

  • Self-Service Facilities: Deployment of 24 new Self Check-in Kiosks to enhance passenger autonomy and reduce wait times.

  • Security Screening: Expansion from 2 to 3 security screening zones (A, B, C).

  • Boarding Gates: Increase from 17 to 30 gates with optimized spatial distribution across the terminal’s East and West wings.

  • Baggage Reclaim: Upgrade from 6 to 8 arrival carousels for improved throughput and reduced congestion.

Advancing Smart Airport Capabilities

The T2 Expansion marks a transformative step in Noi Bai’s digitalization roadmap, introducing a comprehensive suite of automated technologies designed to elevate passenger experience and operational efficiency:

  • Integrated Self-Service Flow: The terminal now features 24 Check-in Kiosks and 24 Self Bag Drop stations, enabling passengers to independently complete seat selection, boarding pass issuance, and baggage check-in.

  • Next-Generation Security Screening:

    • Six 3D Computed Tomography (CT) Scanners with automatic tray return for faster, more accurate screening.

    • Three TSA-compliant Millimeter-Wave Body Scanners, safe for all passengers including pregnant women and individuals with medical implants. These scanners provide rapid, privacy-protected screening through non-ionizing imaging technology.

  • Automated Border Control (Autogate): Newly installed Autogates at immigration and boarding pass checkpoints integrate biometric authentication to accelerate processing and alleviate bottlenecks.

Green Design Principles and Enhanced Passenger Amenities

The expanded terminal incorporates “Green Airport” design philosophy, with landscaped green stations integrated throughout public areas to create a calming, natural atmosphere. To improve passenger comfort, the terminal also introduces:

  • Strollers and child-friendly amenities

  • Dedicated golf-equipment racks for sports travelers

  • Prayer Rooms for spiritual needs

  • A refined ambient scenting system in public zones

Operational Trials Validate Readiness

From December 4–6, 2025, Noi Bai International Airport conducted full-scale operational readiness trials in coordination with the Northern Airports Authority, Immigration Police, Customs, and airport service partners. Eighty simulated passengers and two trial flights—Vietjet Air’s VJ1002 (Hanoi–Siem Reap) and Vietnam Airlines’ VN1001 (Hanoi–Tokyo Narita), were used to test the full passenger journey, from check-in and baggage handling to smart security screening, immigration, and boarding.

The trials ensured that all systems, personnel, and inter-agency coordination processes operate seamlessly ahead of the official commissioning.

Commissioning and Passenger Guidance

Beginning December 19, 2025, Noi Bai International Airport will officially take over and operate the expanded facilities. Updated operational procedures have been disseminated to all stakeholders. Passengers are encouraged to follow new signage and monitor Flight Information Display Systems (FIDS) when navigating the updated terminal layout.

A Milestone for Vietnam’s Aviation Gateway

The commissioning of the expanded Terminal 2 stands as a landmark achievement, reaffirming Noi Bai International Airport’s role as the premier international gateway of the capital and the nation. The project underscores Vietnam’s ongoing commitment to enhancing aviation infrastructure, improving service quality, and strengthening its strategic position in regional and global air transport networks.
